Cusco Classic
4 DAYS / 3 NIGHTS
Embark on a journey through time and culture with our Cusco Classic tour, a 4-day, 3-night exploration of the former capital of the Incan Empire. Cusco, nestled in the heart of the Andes Mountains, is not just a city but a living museum, where ancient Incan structures blend seamlessly with colonial architecture, and vibrant traditions are preserved by warm and welcoming people.
As you step into the cobblestone streets of Cusco, you’ll be greeted by a tapestry of sights, sounds, and flavors that reflect centuries of history and cultural exchange. The city’s main square, Plaza de Armas, serves as the focal point of this bustling metropolis, surrounded by grand cathedrals, colonial mansions, and bustling markets where locals and visitors alike gather to shop, eat, and socialize.
But beyond its charming streets and historic landmarks, Cusco is a treasure trove of ancient wonders waiting to be explored. From the towering walls of Sacsayhuamán to the intricate carvings of Qorikancha, the city is home to some of the most impressive Incan ruins in the world. Each site tells a story of ingenuity, spirituality, and resilience, offering a glimpse into the lives of the people who once called this land home.
But perhaps the true magic of Cusco lies not in its monuments, but in its people. As you wander through the city, you’ll encounter artisans weaving intricate textiles, musicians playing traditional Andean melodies, and locals going about their daily lives with a sense of pride and joy that is infectious. Whether you’re sharing a meal with a local family, learning traditional dances from community elders, or simply exchanging smiles with passersby, you’ll find that the warmth and hospitality of the Cusqueños are as much a part of the experience as the sights themselves. And let’s not forget about the food! Cusco’s culinary scene is a feast for the senses, with a tantalizing array of dishes influenced by indigenous, Spanish, and international flavors. From hearty stews and grilled meats to delicate ceviches and sweet treats made from local fruits and spices, every meal is an adventure in itself, offering a taste of the diverse and vibrant culture that defines this vibrant city.
In short, a visit to Cusco is more than just a journey through history – it’s an immersion into a world where past and present collide, where ancient traditions are kept alive, and where every corner holds a story waiting to be told. So come, experience the magic of Cusco, and discover why this enchanting city continues to capture the hearts of travelers from around the world.
ITINERARY
DAY 1: CUSCO CITY TOUR
Cusco is the historical and archaeological capital of South America, a title awarded by UNESCO to preserve its archaeological monuments and to keep their customs that come from the time of the Incas. Their great archaeological monuments defy time with huge complex which now amaze all visitors.
When your domestic flight arrives in Cusco, look for your National Peru Travel host holding a sign with your name on it! We know you’ll most likely be a little tired after your long flight if this were a international flight, so we’ll save you the stress of trying to navigate and bring you straight to your hotel. Meet your guide and go on a private bus to our half day tour and wander around the archaeological remains of Sacsayhuaman (a place where the Incas staged a great battle against the conquistadors) where you will appreciate large terraces which overlap in zigzag formation surrounded by enormous stone walls well fitted with stone blocks exceeding 6 meters high and weighing over 120 tons. Simply a magnificent work of Incan architecture most worthy of being admired. You will also visit Q’enqo, which means “Labyrinth”. This place is a stone shrine that was used for ritual purposes. Also Pukapukara, which means “red fortress” because the calcareous stones with which is built have acquired the reddish color of the ground. And finally Tambomachay which was a sacred center of worship of water, that were also known as Incan Baths. Return to the city and roam the atmospheric streets of the bohemian neighborhood of San Blas, which is known for its free-spirited scene then explore Qoricancha and the Santo Domingo monastery (famous for being built on the Incan sun temple structures, the main religious building of the Incas dedicated to the worship of the Sun). When the first Spaniards arrived they were amazed to see that the walls of the great temple were covered with gold plates. Finally see where the locals make their grocery runs at the open-air San Pedro market and pass the famous 12-angled stone, whose image appears on the bottle of the famous local Cusqueña beer.
